Epilepsi merupakan salah satu gangguan neurologis tertua yang tercatat dalam sejarah, dan juga cukup sering ditemui. Meskipun demikian, studi-studi menunjukkan bahwa epilepsi masih sering disalahpahami. Kesalahpahaman tentang epilepsi inilah yang menimbulkan stigma negatif. Kesalahpahaman, bahwa “epilepsi itu menular”, “epilepsi adalah gangguan supranatural”, “orang dengan epilepsi itu tidak bisa berprestasi”, “epilepsi adalah penyakit keturunan”… Stigma yang membebani orang dengan epilepsi (ODE), melebihi beban penyakitnya itu sendiri.

ODE akhirnya memilih untuk bersembunyi. Karena khawatir persepsi masyarakat tentang penyakitnya nanti akan membuatnya dikucilkan, sulit mendapat pekerjaan, sulit mendapat pasangan, dan pembatasan-pembatasan lainnya. Berbagai upaya telah dikerahkan di level global maupun lokal untuk menghapus stigma. Setidaknya dalam setahun ada dua momen besar untuk epilepsi. Hari senin pekan kedua bulan Februari setiap tahunnya diperingati sebagai International Epilepsy Day. Selang sebulan, pada tanggal 26 Maret, diperingati sebagai Purple Day. Mari mengenal epilepsi.
